Air Conditioner Repair Cost Guide for Michigan Homeowners

May. 29, 2019
The average cost to repair your AC in Michigan ranges from $163–$3,000+.

Unfortunately, the only way to really know how much your AC repair will cost is to speak with a professional who can assess your AC system and determine what’s wrong.

However, we can tell you there are a few common factors that impact the cost of an AC repair, such as:
  • The part that needs to be repaired
  • Your AC warranty
  • The company or contractor you hire

Below, we’ll walk through these cost factors to help you estimate how much it will cost to repair your air conditioner.

Cost factor #1: What part of your AC needs to be repaired

Some parts of your AC are more expensive than others, so the cost to repair your AC system will depend on what’s broken. It will also depend on whether the part can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced.

A few common AC repairs & replacements include:
  • Detecting and repairing a refrigerant leak ($225–$1,600+)
  • Recharging refrigerant ($200-$800+)
  • Condensate pump replacement ($250- $400)
  • Condenser fan motor replacement ($600-1,200+)
  • Replacing a circuit board ($700- $1,200+)
  • Replacing your AC system ($4,500–$9,000)
For example, the cost to replace a faulty condensate pump starts at $250 but the cost to replace a compressor can cost up to $3,000.

A word of caution: If your AC is 10+ years old and the repair you need is pricey (like replacing the compressor), you should consider investing in a new AC system altogether. Why?

AC systems usually only last 10-15 years. So if you’re facing an expensive repair, it doesn’t make sense to invest a lot of money in a system you’re just going to replace in the near future.

Cost factor #2: Your AC warranty

The cost to repair your AC also depends on whether or not your parts and labor warranties are valid.

Parts warranty- A parts warranty typically lasts 5-10 years unless you paid for an extended warranty (10-15 years). This warranty covers certain parts of your AC if they break down during that time.

To check to see if your parts warranty is still valid, you can look for your AC’s model number
(typically on one of the panels of the outdoor unit) and search the manufacturer's website. If this doesn’t work, you can always contact the manufacturer directly.

Labor warranty- A labor warranty is usually provided by the company or contractor who installs your AC system. A standard labor warranty usually lasts 1-2 years, and an extended labor warranty lasts 5+ years. If your repair is due to improper installation, this could be covered by the labor warranty.

To see if your labor warranty is valid, you should call the company or contractor who installed your system.

Cost factor #3: The company or contractor you hire

The company/contractor you hire also affects how much you'll pay for your AC repair.

Typically, the more experienced a contractor is, the more expensive they are. However, if you need an AC repair or replacement, you want to hire a qualified technician, so you don’t have to pay for the same service a few months down the road.
