Five Ways to Prepare Your Home for Extreme Cold in Michigan.

Jan. 29, 2019
Extreme cold is blowing across Michigan, and many Metro Detroit home owners are wondering what they need to do to prepare for the polar vortex. Here’s five things to keep in mind as the mercury falls:

1) HOME NOT REACHING SETTING ON THERMOSTAT
Most furnaces are sized to keep a home set to 70 degrees when it is 0 degrees outside. Anytime the temperature outside dips below 0 degrees, it is common for the furnace to run, but not heat the home as expected. Example: -10 degrees outdoors could equal 60 degrees indoors. If you notice your thermostat is not reaching the set temperature, check to make sure you feel heat coming from the registers – if you don’t feel any heat, then give us a call.

2)  KEEP THE TEMPERATURE ON HOLD
During the next few days, forgo the automatic setting on your thermostat and keep your home at a constant temperature. It decreases the strain on your furnace and helps you stay more comfortable. Don’t set it at 80 degrees to compensate for the cold weather, just keep it at your usual setting (average home is 68-72).

3) SEAL OUT THE LEAKS
Minimize the cold air infiltration by sealing up doors and windows. You can do this placing towels and blankets in front of drafty doors, sealing windows with plastic, and keeping curtains and blinds closed.

4) PROTECT PIPES FROM FREEZING
Frigid outdoor temperatures can wreak damage on pipes – especially those on outside walls or within unsealed spaces. We recommend keeping cabinet doors open to warm the pipes below your sinks. Another proactive tip is to let your faucets trickle water to keep the lines flowing. Make sure you run both the hot and cold water because they are two separate lines. If you are concerned about letting water trickle, then make sure you turn on every faucet each hour.

5) PIPES ARE STARTING TO FREEZE
If you’ve noticed a slow running faucet – now is the time to prevent further damage. Turn the water on warm (open both the hot and cold) and let it flow. The water running through the lines will help to defrost the pipe. If that doesn’t return flow and your pipe needs to be repaired, call us and we'll send a licensed plumber to your Michigan home.
