How Much Does Drain Cleaning Cost in Michigan?

Nov. 06, 2019
In Michigan, drain cleaning costs anywhere from $99 to $2,000.

We know that’s a broad price range. But without a professional visiting your home and inspecting your drain line, it’s hard to say exactly how much drain cleaning will cost you.

The reason we can’t give you an exact estimate is because drain cleaning depends on many factors, such as:
  • The location of the clog
  • Ease of access
  • Tools needed to perform the cleaning

We’ll go into more detail about each of these factors below to get you a better idea of everything that goes into the cost.

But first, let’s start by looking at the signs you need drain cleaning to see if you can benefit from this service.

Signs you need drain cleaning

Since drain cleaning can be expensive, you’ll want to make sure you actually need this service.
  • You should have your drains cleaned if you notice the following signs:
  • Your drains are slow or clog often
  • You see sewage backing up in fixtures like your toilet or bathtub
  • You hear gurgling noises coming from your pipes
Note: If you only notice these signs near one plumbing fixture or area of your home, it could mean you have a single clog. If you notice these signs throughout your home, it could mean your sewer main line is clogged or that multiple pipes need to be cleaned. Either way, you’ll want to contact a professional to perform a camera inspection to inspect your pipes and find the issue.

Factors that affect drain cleaning cost

Now that you’ve verified you need your drains cleaned, let’s look at the factors we mentioned earlier in more detail.

The location of the clog (secondary line vs main line)

The sewer lines in your home can be divided into 2 categories:
  1. Secondary lines
  2. Main line

Secondary plumbing lines feed into the main sewer line

The secondary lines connect your plumbing fixtures to the main line. The main line carries the waste from these fixtures away from your home and into the city sewer line.

Generally speaking, the cost to clean or unclog the main line will be more expensive because it is farther down in the piping system.

Ease of access to your sewer line cleanout
Basically, the harder it is to access the clog, the more it will cost to clean your main sewer line.

If the clogged line(s) are far from your home’s sewer cleanout (the point of access to your main sewer line), it will take more time and effort to reach the clog—which raises the total cost of the job.

Tools needed to perform the cleaning

The type of tool a plumber will use to clean your home’s pipes depends on the severity of the clog or how dirty your pipes are.

For minor cleaning or removing small clogs, a plumber will typically use an auger (plumber’s snake) to do the job. This is typically the least expensive tool to unclog a drain.

That said, unclogging a drain with an auger only punches a hole through a clog—meaning it will still look relatively clogged on the inside.

For a thorough drain cleaning, the plumber will need to use a more advanced auger bit, hydro jetter and/or descaler to remove all of the gunk buildup inside the pipes. In addition to the extra cost of these tools, this extensive drain cleaning process also takes longer, which makes it more expensive.
