Stop Wasting Water & Money; Learn How to Detect a Leak

Jun. 10, 2016
Household leaks can waste more than 1 trillion gallons of water annually nationwide, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. It’s hard to tell what 1 trillion gallons of water looks like so let’s put it in perspective.

1 Trillion Gallons of Water are Equal to:

• 9 percent of the total water needed to end the California drought, according to NASA (which reported in December that the state has a water deficit of 11 trillion gallons).
• It’s about 40 million swimming pools and 24 billion baths.
• It’s about equal to the capacity of Florida’s vast Lake Okeechobee.

Where are all these leaks coming from? There are leaks we often see but don’t notice. Along with leaking pipes or the obvious discoloration in your ceiling and drywall that will indicate a leak; simple leaky kitchen and bathroom faucets, malfunctioning toilets, and faulty sprinkler systems are contributing to water waste because they go unaddressed.

Have you ever figured out how much water you’re wasting? Now you can with this Leak Calculator found on the Thornton & Grooms website.

Plumbers get a lot of calls about running toilets. Do you know “A continuously running toilet can waste between 1,000 and 4,000 gallons of water PER DAY and potentially increase your bill by hundreds and even thousands of dollars”?

The EPA estimates that about 10 percent of water bills across the country could be reduced by addressing leaks.

Schedule your Home Safety Inspection today and ask your plumber to alert you of any leaks!
