Summer Plumbing Tips for Your Home

Jun. 13, 2017
Rising temperatures mean our dreams of warm summer days, green grass, swimming, barbeques with friends, and trips up north are finally here. But with that comes an average of 25% more water usage per home. So what do you need to know to keep your home plumbing worry-free and efficient this summer? Here are seven easy tips:

  1. Vacations – If you are heading out of town for a few days, turn down your water heater to conserve energy while you are gone.
  2. Watering your lawn – Water your lawn in the early morning and evening hours when the sun is low or down. Watering your lawn mid-day or when the sun is high causes much of the water to be loss due to evaporation. Also, make sure your sprinklers are aimed at the lawn – not driveways, sidewalks, or roads.
  3. Efficient showerheads, faucets and toilets – EPA WaterSense products allow you to use less water, save money, and still maintain great water pressure.
  4. Dirty clothes – Baseball games and afternoons at the pool mean more dirty laundry during the summer months. Help prevent a flood in your home by checking your washing machine hoses for bulges, cracks, or leaks. Plastic hoses usually last about three years.
  5. Washing the car – Do you love handwashing your car? If you do, just be sure you turn off the water or use a nozzle when you are not rinsing it so water doesn’t freely flow from the hose.
  6. Garbage disposal – Summer barbeques often mean corn on the cob, fresh fruit, and other fibrous, stringy foods. Do yourself a favor and do not throw those items in your garbage disposal. Make sure you keep fats and oils out of there too!
  7. Sewer line – The trees in your front yard may stretch their roots during the summer months in search of water, and might find their way into your sewer lines. If you notice sewage backups in your main drain lines, give us a call.
Following these tips will help keep your plumbing in top shape all summer long. And if you do run into any issues, schedule an appointment with our top-notch, licensed plumbers.
